Tell us about what led you to start your business?
I realized last year that there was a lack of affordable boutiques that catered to women looking to buy pieces that could be worn to work or incorporated into weekend wear. Inspired by the amazing life of Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, a former slave who became a successful seamstress, civil activist, and author — Keckley Clothing was born.
What is your favorite part of being a business owner?
My “love language” is gift giving. That being said, I love sharing great deals! There’s nothing more rewarding than being able to offer a quality item that my customers can buy without breaking the bank. During a time when many are counting every penny, Keckley offers retail therapy for $20 or under (+free shipping).
What challenges have you faced as a business owner?
One of the biggest challenges has been starting a business in the midst of a global pandemic. I had no idea when I opened in February of 2020 that things would change drastically in a month’s time. I also find the ability to take quality photographs as a definite challenge. I can’t afford expensive photographers or cameras so I find myself using my iPhone and various apps to improve the overall quality of my images.
How can shoppers support your business and other Black-owned businesses?
One of the biggest ways shoppers can support my business and other Black-owned businesses, is by liking and sharing our products! Writing great reviews and sharing our listings with your family and friends means more than you realize! You can find us on Facebook @KeckleyClothing and Instagram @keckley_clothing.
Share your experience working with Jane and how you hope it leads to growing your business.
Jane has been a true blessing to my business. The exposure on the Jane platform provides the opportunity to reach customers from across the country. In addition, the support given by Jane representatives and other boutique owners in the Jane Community is absolutely priceless! I am truly grateful and honored to be a seller on Jane.
