Okay let’s be honest here. The idea of cooking with kids is great, but when it comes down to actually cooking with them, well… let’s just say it’s a bit messier. The benefits, however, will out weigh the mess in the long run. Here are 5 reasons you should pull up those sleeves and get those littles in the kitchen.
1. They learn basic math skills in a fun environment.
What better way to teach your kids math than with a real live math demonstration! Have younger kids count how many scoops of flour the cookies need, or how many carrots to add to the salad. If your kids are learning fractions, cooking is a perfect way to show how fractions can be used in a real life scenario.
2. They see basic science skills come to life.
Cooking is a live science experiment your kids get to be a part of. Show them how different ingredients interact when mixed together and how different increments of the same ingredients can have a completely different outcome
3. It teaches them about safety.
What better way to teach a kid to not play with hot items than to have them “play” with hot items. Show them how the stove works. Show them how the oven works and while you are showing them these “dangerous” kitchen items, show them how to use them safely. Teach them about hot pads and keeping anything flammable away from the stovetop. Show them how a knife can easily cut a carrot, and in turn could easily cut our finger if we didn’t use it carefully and correctly. (Always reiterate that when using these types of kitchen tools, an adult must be present.
4. It builds their confidence.
Have you ever seen the look on your kids face when they are sharing their masterpiece with you, or even better, devouring it themselves? Kids love praise, especially from adults. Cooking is an easy way for them to create something, see the finished product and receive parental praise.
5. It teaches them an important life skill.
The busier life gets, the harder it is to kindle the art of cooking meals from scratch. We can easily turn to a fast food joint or a grab-and-go freezer meal instead of spending time in the kitchen. That’s why I love companies like Foodstirs. They provide the pure, healthy ingredients I want to feed my family, in a fast, easy to use way. Everything you need is included within the kit. They are simple to use and taste amazing, plus they are delivered to your door monthly.
Even though cooking with kids can be more time consuming than whipping it up yourself. The time spent in the kitchen with your kids will be worth it in the long run. And if you are looking for some budget friendly cooking items, check out Jane.com. Happy cooking!
